The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is attempting to improve state enrollment in higher education through a statewide campaign and tutoring programs based at the University and other schools.On campus, the primary agent for this effort is G-Force, an organization of student volunteers who are trained to help at area high schools.
The group's members work out of "Go Centers" at the schools where students from elementary to high school can get help on homework and information about college. It is good resume experience, and it's great for education majors who want to work with younger students," said Mayas Monument-Baker, president of the UT chapter of G-Force.Similar programs at around other colleges in the state also include high school, staff and faculty volunteers. Moumen-Baker, a sophomore in communication studies and political communication, started the UT chapter in February for the coordinating the board's request. Members have been working out of the Center at Johnston High School. Students who participate in G-Force can get scholarship funding after they work with the Center for a semester, Moumen-Baker said.She said also, the group will begin helping the Lake Travis High School and American Youth Works, a private high school.
The coordinating board launched its College for Texans campaign, which includes G-Force, in November 2002 after a legislative authorization, according Website of Texan College. State officials are worried that only 4.9 percent of the state's population is enrolled in college.
