San Francisco: to shock you
July 27, 2006 on 2:08 am | In Travel | Comments OffSan Francisco a city not bigger than New York or London, the land undulates here so much, from high up you can see over the whole expanse of the city and out onto the surrounding bays. If New York reminds you of towering skyscrapers; San Francisco will be of all the rooftops and hills, and surrounding water of the bays- a lot less claustrophobic. The roads going up the hills are great, so different to the usual flat city roads.
This multicultural city has more Hispanics and Asians than white Americans.
Pier 39 is one of the main tourist attractions, wherefrom all the ferries and trams leave. It has more than 110 specialty shops mostly souvineer shops and junk food outlets. The Pier is home to a colony of sealions.
Alcatraz is for nature watching. You also get to see The Golden Gate Bridge and many buildings of historical importance that reminds you of the conditions the inmates suffered. Alcatraz, a Spanish word for Seagull, was named by the Spanish explorer Juan Manuel De Ayala in 1775 because this is the place you get to see a lot of seagulls.
A trip on a tram is fun here. A good British engineering, running now for 123 years, the tram operates via a cable under the ground and the trams grip it when they want to move and release it when they need to stop. A good system of getting them up the hills, but when they grip the tram lurches forward; people were always being thrown backwards when caught unawares! Great fun.
Nicasio, up in the rolling hills of West Marin County is the exact centre of the county. You see “real” America here. A proper cowboy town.
Muir Woods National Monument, a remnant of the coast redwood forests. The woods are brilliant. It is a great change from the hectic lifestyle of the city, and the air is so much cleaner and cooler.
San Francisco has much more to shock you like when I used to think of California I didn’t picture rolling green hills and amazing views.
